Cancelled

Today was a day of cancellations. Actually, it started yesterday. With my optometrist, whose efficient and polite assistant informed me at check-in that the doctor had been ill for two days and was not in for my appointment. Today however, people called to cancel their appointments to see me, except in the one case where she just didn't show up. I guess that's a cancellation of sorts, as well.

Initially, I was annoyed. I am tightly scheduled by choice, and I hate wasting time if it's not my own time I'm wasting. At work, I prefer to be busy. Today though, a co-worker asked me if I had a free moment. And I did. Because today was a day of cancellations.

My co-worker wanted to know how you know another person is worth what it's going to cost you to be with them. He asked because his girlfriend is struggling with some REALLY BIG stuff. Stuff going all the way back to age 3, stuff that should never happen, but did. We talked for the duration of what should have been two appointments.

In the end, I told him that you don't know. You never can, not for certain. You have to decide that you're willing to pay the price just for the opportunity, not for the outcome. It's a gamble, like most things.

As his eyes welled, and he reached simply for my hand, I knew he was going to be a gambling kinda man. I wished him all the best, and I was never so grateful for cancellations in all my life.

Bowl Cleaner

OK, so after today I'm thinking we're heavy on the "bowl", and light on the "super".

Discuss.

Deja You

Ever looked at a photo or work of art you've never before seen, and experienced a part of your life that never happened? Sometimes that's what it's like, looking into the eyes of another. I don't know if it happens that way for everyone, but I'm certain it doesn't happen that way all the time. How can you recognize something indescribably foreign as familiar?

And why do I want so much to go home to a place I've never been?

'07 In Review

OK... it's 4 days old now, and that's a fine time to review everything I've accomplished in '07.

Alright, then. There you have it. I've accomplished exactly nothing in the new year, and it's very likely to stay that way for some time. You know how a puppy will follow its own tail, yipping and barking, spinning and snapping, spending enormous energy and effort to chase frantically after that which by the bounds of simple physics and reality cannot be effectively caught? Yeah, well... that pretty much explains '07 so far.

You are all very sweet to worry -- I'm fine and I miss you terribly!! I'll be around checking up on you at some point in the near future, but at the moment there's a tail behind me begging to be chased. Gotta go!
