Phantoms

Cradling a mug of steaming coffee, she inhaled deeply and savored the heady fragrance, warm and deep and reminiscent of hazy mornings on a beach somewhere. Ah, but some musings are best left alone. She squared her shoulders and marshaled her thoughts into other territory, though the notion lingered just off the starboard bow of her consciousness.

Memories are powerful boats, ferrying all sorts of perceptions, emotions and fantasies into consciousness -- bidden or not, and sometimes all that's needed to set them afloat is a scent, a glimpse, a familiar image, a slant of the light, or shadow. No amount of determination to forget is equal to the strength of a memory evoked, even if it's but a phantom memory of something merely desired, never experienced. Such memories are perhaps the most troublesome, since they blur the lines between what is known, what can be known, and what is nevertheless true.

Genuine thoughts seemed closely associated with either coffee or wine, she noted wryly. The indisputable nature of the fact confirmed the adage, "Better living through chemistry," she supposed, and poured herself another cup.

If your intention was to get us to crave both coffee and wine then as always you have done it with aplomb.

Ah, I understand this. You're on a boat. Not safe for kids; or anyone, really.

Scott: I like you. Hi.

Zuhn: So... one in each hand?

Ashley: Awww, that's nice of you. Thanks.

Susie: A what kind of boat was that you say? ;)

Lovely writing.
And it's odd how a simple thing can make memories flood back into the conscious.

Coffee and wine do go well with chocolate. All of which are tasty. Three of the main food groups, right?

This is beautiful, Shari. Glad you're writing more. :)

Seth: Well, hello there! It is odd isn't it, but for all that, fairly universal -- in that most of us experience it. Which then brings up the question whether it's actually odd or not... :)

Matt: Mmmmm... chocolate. Wait, what were we talking about? Oh right, TEQUILACON!! Yay!

Totally off topic but did anything ever become of Cornelius Cranberry? Oh how I loved him. He lives in a folder on my desktop so I can read him whenever the urge strikes me.
