Smith, according to Sarah (and me)
Sarah McLachlan has been making music I enjoy for so many years. In '03, she released "Afterglow", which is one of my all-time favorite albums by anyone, anywhere. Not necessarily the music -- though I enjoy it -- but more because of the raw emotion in the lyrics. I guess I like the catharsis.
But here it is, the crux of my fondness for this album: track 6, entitled "Push."
"Every time I look at you the world just melts away. All my troubles, all my fears dissolve in your affection. You see me at my weakest but you take me as I am. When I fall you offer me a softer place to land.
"You stay the course, you hold the line, you keep it all together. You're the one true thing I know I can believe in. You're all the things that I desire, you save me, you complete me. You're the one true thing I know I can believe.
"I get mad so easy, but you give it room to breathe. No matter what I say or do, you're too good to fight about it. Even when I have to push just to see how far you'll go, you don't stoop down to battle me, you never turn to go.
"You stay the course, you hold the line, you keep it all together. You're the one true thing I know I can believe in. You're all the things that I desire, you save me, you complete me. You're the one true thing I know I can believe."
There's more, but those two verses plus the repeating chorus just summarize my husband so well. The song embodies the simple truth of why I could never imagine loving anyone for a lifetime except the guy who took me on as his wife.
I'm home this morning doing laundry, cleaning the house, and reassembling a bathroom that experienced, shall we say, technical difficulties before school. I had the stereo on, and when this song played, it just dropped me. I literally sat where I was, cleaning rag in my hand, and wept for the simple purity of the expression.
Of course, now I'm wasting time sitting here telling you about it... but it felt somehow momentous enough to share, important enough to set aside the To-Do list and mark the feeling; for I believe moments like these are the building blocks of happiness. To have overlooked it would have been foolish.

Oh darlin... that is fabulous... really.
And seriously, ANYTHING trumps the to-do list, doesn't it?
Music can be pretty darn powerful at times. In fact, I love music so much, I never listen to it at work. I can't *hear* the music for trying to concentrate on work, or being distracted by somebody whose mouse won't click. So, bonus points awarded, despite the icky sweetness to this post. :)
And I guess I should say that of the thousands of songs I have, I don't believe Sarah is part of the collection.
CK: Abso-friggin-lutely! And, thanks. :)
Bloggy: I shall email you some Sarah if you wish. As for "icky sweetness," all I can say is thank goodness for the mention of a misbehaving bathroom or else I wouldn't have gotten those bonus points, would I?!
What a fabulous moment. And you truly experienced it.
Sorry, the panel of judges is not allowed to divulge the manner in which bonus points are awarded.
Kranki: That's exactly it: I really experienced it. Thanks.
Bloggy: Wait, now there's panelling? You just take your 70s wall decor right on out of here, young man! There will be NO panel!
You know, it takes a lot for this terrible rusted heart of mine to do anything resembling a swoon these days, but you and Mr E somehow manage to pull it off. You crazy dang kids.
Clearly I have little choice now but to share some scotch with the both of you in the summer.
I LOVE Sarah! Afterglow is one of my all time favorites too.
What a beautiful post. I am glad you took the time to tell us about it.
If I recall, you just told another man you love him...Ok he IS in kindergarden, but still...;0)
Twinnie my dear, you amaze me. How beautiful. I hope to feel like that about another soul someday. I love you.
What Vahid said. Because he said it better than I was going to and I'm not above stealing.
I like Sarah. Ever since the brothers McMullen thing she did.
Vahid: You swooned? Awwwwww, that's so sweet. And YES - there WILL be scotch! And wine, and beer...
Shangie: Well, y'know... those kindergarteners are awfully hard to resist. ;)
Twinnie: I hope that for you too, sweet one. Love you!
Matt: Especially when there's beer involved, that's when stealing is completely justified. ;)
William: Hiya friend!
I like Sarah. Smith sounds . . . perfect, dare I say? But then, look who he's married to. Look to whom he's married at? Look at to whom he married? Yea, look at you.
Susie: Awww... you say the nicest things on account of you're my sister, but I'll take 'em, and thanks. ;)
Far from perfect, both Smith and me, but practically perfect for each other nonetheless. We're sort of the Mary Poppins of relationships most days.
Thank you for sharing that beautiful experience. This world is so cynical and full of angry, hateful people, that something like this is a ray of sunshine. I'm glad you found someone like Smith to love. And I'm glad he found someone like you to love, too. :-)
Aw, Shari...that's beautiful, lady.
I love Sarah, too.
Squirl: That was an awesome comment. Made me grin ear-to-ear. Thanks.
Jessica: Oh hi, friend! Thank you!! Sarah's great, isn't she?
