Revelations

To see things through the eyes of someone less accustomed than yourself to the daily vistas of your own life is quite revealing. If you're prone to overanalyzing, that is.
At first, there's the exuberance of novelty; that which is new is unfailingly exciting. But with the wearing of the day, novelty gives way to cautious familiarity, aided in part by simple fatigue. Then, as evening yields itself to full-on darkness, another reality thuds dully into place like an anchor: everything, everyone, every experience is new only once.
I had the fortune this weekend to spend time with friends, and I truly consider them so, though I've only really known them on-line. Together we dabbled in my world, and through their eyes I learned (or re-learned) the following:
~I lack the sophistication I've always envied in others, but I have a warm and genuine smile, and oddly, I hug nearly everyone I know;
~I laugh easily -- too easily perhaps, betraying a mind almost effortlessly amused, but I revel in the banter of those whose intellects afford them a rapier wit;
~A chipmunk is really quite fascinating, especially when seen up close;

~There's a nearly infinite variety of fungi growing underfoot on a path I've traveled often, but have never really seen;

~Sunlight looks different when filtered through cedar branches; and the creeeeaaaaaaak-ing sound made by trees in the wind is unbelievably cool;
~Tacky bars with tackier music at unbearable volumes, are nearly unendurable when you're jet-lagged, no matter how lovely the company;
~Love and marriage are rarely mined from the same quarry; but sometimes, some dazzlingly beautiful times, they are;
~Love can't be avoided always, either. It's beautiful then too, though painful;
And finally,
~Mixing margaritas and martinis is no better an idea the second time you do it than the first. ... Really.
Thank you, THANK YOU, for being here -- it was a highlight of my summer!

Hi Eclectic! Great post. There are new things on my well-traveled paths that I've not noticed before either. That seems to be a theme this year. Very nice photos you've put up.
The man behind the curtain says that people with sophistication have nothing that can’t be gotten at a secondhand store and displayed in the proper light. So to you, Sweet Dorothy, I give you this…one jewel encrusted Sharper Image flashlight. It never needs batteries and only requires your warm and invigorating touch.
Now, where’s that confounded balloon?
I think sophistication is overrated. At least I hope it is, because I don't have any! I'm a bit envious of online friends meeting you my dear. September and my trek to college girls drop off point are just around the corner and this time, there will be no stopping me! MWAH!
Sophistication is only an illusion.
Just remember. Everyone farts. ;)
"~Love can't be avoided always, either. It's beautiful then too, though painful;"
No truer words, my friend.
Except the ones about the chipmunk, of course. Reminds me of a joke:
"A visitor comes across two monks working in monastery kitchen preparing fish and chips. One is frying the fish, the other is peeling, slicing and frying the potatoes.
'What do you guys do?' asks the visitor.
'Well,' says one, 'I am the friar, and he is the chip monk.'"
Rimshot
I couldn't agree more with the second paragraph.
~I never understood sophistication
~You have a lovely laugh
~Margaritas + Martinis = Uh-oh...
/off to look up sophisticated in dictionary.com
Now I'm jealous, and I would like to get drunk and take pictures of fungi with you too.
I think that chipmunk is rabid.
Um, excuse me... do you have any blueberry pancakes? I've had a bit of a craving for them since visiting Bloggy's blog this morning...
It is amazing to me when things are seen through others eyes ~ how different things look. You wrote about it beautifully. Like always.
From the pictures that I've seen of you, I do believe you have the nicest smile *EVER*!!! I cannot wait to see it in person....oh and I want a hug too ;-)
You write so well.
a weekend with you? those sound like some lucky, lucky kids.
"~Love and marriage are rarely mined from the same quarry; but sometimes, some dazzlingly beautiful times, they are;

Oh, yes; and oh, yes. And you are wonderful.
Sounds fabulous -- and I, too, met some online friends this weekend and couldn't be happier that I did.
Lynn: Welcome! So nice to see you and your shiny new blog!!
Bloggy: Is that a Sharper Image jewel-encrusted flashlight in your pocket...?
Traci: Promises, promises! September sounds perfect.
CKelli: Say "excuse me" when you do that, young lady. ;)
Jim: Get it? "Chip" "Monk" ?? Ha!! When are we going for drinks?!
M/D: Wanna hangout?? I'm calling it "M&M Night". ;)
Peefer: TC'07 anyone??
Limpy: It's likely, but with a healthy appetite for trailmix.
CK: Blueberry pancakes? Why, whatever do you mean?? ;)
Nina: You warm my soul. Like always. :)
Sooze: Actually, the smile's a bit lopsided; but I'm sure you'll get the hug. Apparently I know half this town and the hugging's getting a bit out of control. *heh*
William: Coming from you -- that guy who always makes me smile -- it's a meaningful compliment. Thank you.
Kat: Oh man, you have no idea! There was this diuretic at lunch having a leisure, and Lewis and Clark showed up on the hike... it was fantastic!
Susie: Seeing you here just makes my whole day. Thanks!
Sandra: It's surreal, isn't it? In a wonderful way, though!
Ooh! M&M night???
*interest has been piqued*
Email me and we'll get it set up.
That's some good advice.
I agree with you about the sophistication bit. We all try way too hard to be just so, when being just us is the best way to be.
I haven't met any of my fellow bloggers yet. Maybe one of these days I will.
We don't have chipmonks here in south Texas. Only squirrels. And armadillas.
i don't know what you're talking about, as usual. but i do know that i have the faintest memory of huckleberry and grey goose vodka that a very good friend could not carry with her as she flew away. and few things are more painful and beautiful than booze left behind. just a few things.
M/D: Oh sure, now you tell me. You're off to Oklahoma! Maybe when you get back, hmm?
Lynn: Well, if we're hiking together when that happens, I will yell at you to run and we'll both have a good laugh while we discuss whether it made a sound because we heard it, or whether we heard it because it made a sound.
Hemlock: Amen, sister.
Gary: Now I think armadillos are totally cool, but I've never seen one up close and personal. Are you like, Corpus Christi-South?
Ducky: Few things indeed, my friend.
So many beautiful words in this post. And I love the pictures. We call that first one a Michigan lilly. I think it's also called a tiger lilly, correct me if I'm wrong, please.
One of these days I'm going to meet you in person and I'll get to see that smile and experience that hug. Can't wait.
