Sorta like Coffee Talk with Mike Myers

Remember that SNL skit? I loved it. This post is only vaguely like that, though, and not a bit funny -- sorry.

Being that I'm preoccupied with personal matters ... what? Yes, I know that this is a personal journal. No, I'm still not going to write about every personal matter I experience. As I was saying, being that I'm preoccupied at the moment and cannot create anything even vaguely resembling an interesting/entertaining/challenging post, I shall instead give you a topic to discuss.

Here it is: The new reality show "Black.White". I've not seen it yet, don't even know if it has aired yet, but the press it is getting has attracted my notice. I read the book, "Black Like Me" and was profoundly affected by it. Also saw the movie of that name years later, and again was struck by how subtle and toxic category-based hate can be.

Now before I say this next thing, I ask you to please not go hatin' on me: I have never watched a "reality" tv show. Seriously. "Hi, I'm Shari, and I've never seen a Survivor, or Bachelor, or Amazing Race or anything." I know... I'm a serious pop-culture LOSER. Still, this "Black.White" may have crossed the line into tv I will watch.

Talk amongst yourselves.

I don't know if it's aired yet either, but I saw the families on Oprah a few weeks back.

What really struck me about it is how the black family took offense at something the white mom said (I think she called someone a "beautiful creature"), even though from the context you could tell she didn't mean it in a derogatory way at all. In fact, she meant it as a compliment.

I guess I've always kind of thought we're all just people, but that really helped me understand how our different experiences and worldviews can really influence how we see things.

Get OUT! You too?

I have never, ever, not once, not even for a millisecond watched a reality TV show.

I saw the ad for that "Black.White" one too a couple nights ago. If you watch it, will you let us know YOUR feelings?

I hope your personal mumbo jumbo works itself out real soon My Friend.

I don't watch reality shows, so put me on that list too. Seeing reality everyday is enough for me. I might have to check this one out however. If I can get the remote control away from John, since he doesn't watch reality shows either. Again I think it has to do with seeing too much reality everyday. :)

Well I watch Survivor with my daughters...it's a family night kind of thing and I absolutely LOVE Amazing Race. That said, I watch so little tv that my girls have to work the remote for me! LOL I can barely operate the DVD player and I'm totally ok with that! LOL

My wife and I watched "Black/White" and I can report that we thought it was excellent...it is a six week docu-drama...so we only saw the initial part of the show.

I also saw the Oprah with the families on it...(my wife loves Oprah) :)

My initial impression is that the black family is much more in tune with the struggles of both black and white people. The white father and mother are racist (at least subconsciously) and the white daughter is very accepting like the black family.

We'll see how it plays out :)

I admit that we watch a lot of reality tv...but Amazing Race is our favorite!

OMG. This is the first I've heard of this show and YIKES. Seriously, changing your "race" for a week does not change a history of racism and it does not erase people's memories of racism. In other words, as a Chinese person, there is no way for me to truly understand and experience life as anything other than a Chinese person who lived in Asia and now lives in N. Am. I can't unlearn the prejudices and I can't experience life as someone who may not have encountered the same things I have. As contentious an issue as race is in the US, I don't see any point in having a show like this where all we're going to learn is that life as someone you're not is different. Seems like it trivializes the race issue when a much more productive dialogue is still missing and necessary.

Anyways... :)

Hope things are working out for you slowly but surely.

We Tivo'd the first episode (there are 6 in all) but haven't found the time to watch yet. We'll let you know how we feel after we watch.

Last Summer FX had this show called "30 Days" that was similar and very intersting. For 30 days someone went out of their lives into someone elses to live their lives. The one that stands out most to me now was a religious righty moving to San Fran and living with a gay man for 30 days. The transformation from ignorance to acceptance was awe-inspiring. You could actually see that young man's mind open up.

Sorry....I could go on for days about discrimination. I'll shut up now. :)

For the record: tequila.

Stick with me, kid. I'll get you hooked. I'm going to start you out on some of the more intellectual reality shows, like Frontier House on PBS. It's the gateway show that will eventually lead you to Survivor.
