When you smile, the whole world stops and stares for awhile

Dear Brooke,

Today you'll find out whether you advance to the primaries for ASB elections. You're worried. I know. After weeks of fence riding, you made the decision to throw your hat in the ring for vice president; and now you wonder whether it was worth it.

Tuesday, you spoke to the assembled student body of your high school, about 1500 students since the seniors weren't present, plus an assortment of adults including teachers, parents and coaches. You were so brave! It had to be nerve-wracking, yet you spoke confidently and determinedly. I know in retrospect you wish you'd written a different speech, you feel like yours didn't favorably compare with Jamil's, etc. And I won't patronize you by assuring you that yours was best. That concept is too subjective to even be relevant. What I will tell you is that I recognize the risk you took, and I have some idea of what it cost you personally to take it, to lay yourself out for public acceptance or rejection, and I'm so damn proud of you!

Here's the thing: risks are risky because they don't always lead to success. Some percentage of the time they're the prelude to failure. But people who don't take risks fail 100% of the time to ever achieve anything but the status quo. Failure doesn't mean a risk wasn't worth taking, it simply means you have an enhanced basis from which to better appreciate it the next time you succeed. And there will ALWAYS be a next success for you, honey, so long as you keep being you and keep taking risks. Plan them, calculate them, sure; but please, please take them.

I haven't any way to know how the vote will go. I hope you advance to the primary, but if anything in politics is certain, it's that nothing is certain. If you advance, I'm going to be the first in line to congratulate your peers for not being idiots. If you don't, I'll be the first in line to reassure you that electoral approval isn't the only measure of acceptance.

Love,

~Mom

I have missed you (and your mad writing skills).

I do hope her peers aren't idiots.

That's sage advice! You can't win if you never play, and every experience is a learning experience, win or lose.

I haven't felt this good about politics in a long while.

Just in case, make sure you have her birth certificate handy.

Awwww, you guys...

Thanks for your lovely comments, all y'all! (Except for Limpy... yours wasn't so much lovely, but it did make Brooke laugh out loud, so thanks for that too.)

The vote did not go her way, unfortunately. (Brandon, I blame you for leaking the info about her alleged non-U.S. birth and obvious terrorist proclivities due to her foreign-sounding last name.) But the good news is that now she doesn't have to give another speech.

Maybe not this time, this election, but her day will come. Brooke is way too rad to NOT change the world. (Don't ask me how I know these things. It's part of my condition.)

Having learned invaluable lessons about risk and reward, success and failure, politics and other burdens, etc., she can now enjoy all the extra spare time she'll have as a result of not being elected by rock climbing and kung fu fighting. Not necessarily at the same time, of course;
unless that's her thing, in which case it would be awesome to watch.

Vahid: I wouldn't presume to question your knowledge of most anything, or how you know it. In fact, I usually rely on it. Especially while in Portland.

Sir: Kung fu rock climbing is de rigeur with the youngsters nowadays, I'm sure.

Kristiana: Those are surely unreasonably kind words. Thank you!

Bucky: Yeah! Let's chain ourselves to the expresso stand by the cafeteria and refuse to quit drinking coffee until they hold the recount!

Wow, what a great Mom, and what a great kid. I want to swipe your letter, for my kid. Such wisdom about risk-taking.

One of my unofficial mentors wears a silver turtle on a chain around her neck, a reminder that until you're willing to stick your neck out, you'll never go anywhere. Your beautiful letter is turtle advocacy.

Good grief, Twinnie. You are the BEST mom! I nearly forgot how much I love to read your words. Brooke is a lucky, lucky girl to have you. MWAH!
