A Good Day
Tempted as I am to wax all philosophical on you -- y'know, delving into the existential questions of whether circumstances can rightly be judged "good" or not, and getting into discussions of zen and consciousness -- INSTEAD, I have opted just to tell you about my day. Which was good.
It started at 6:30am, instead of the typical 5:00, which was very, very good. It progressed to a fresh pot of perfect coffee brewed by Mr. Eclectic, whose coffee-making skills ensured him my hand in marriage.* From there, it was breakfast, and brownies fresh from the oven at 7:45, cheerful children on time for the schoolbus, and into the office where I discovered the answer to a question that's been pending for over a week! Oh, and I found something to wear that didn't even need to be ironed!! BONUS!!**
Work ended early, because this week is parent/teacher conference week in our school district, so I'm out of the office and kids are out of school. I attended a conference for our son, at which I was told he's exceptional in every good way, and unremarkable in every way where that's what you'd want to hear, too.*** Then, to celebrate, he and I spent the remainder of the afternoon doing his Christmas shopping -- at his request. On the way home, he said, "Mom, I kinda like just having this time with you. Thanks."
And now, dinner is ready, Monday night football is almost ready to start, there's beer in the fridge, and my life is good.****
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
* If I never told you that story, I'll tell you now: When we first met, I was fresh off an all-night solo drive from Lincoln, NE to Cicero, IN -- about 13 hours -- following a full week of lawschool and no sleep. He offered me what was perhaps the best cup of coffee I've ever tasted, and I knew right then I was in serious trouble. I mean, seriously, that coffee AND those shoulders? :::sheesh:::
** I do NOT press clothing. I can't be bothered, except in extreme cases; however, it is always a little embarassing to go to work in something that should have been ironed.
*** In other words, socially he fits in, but academically, he's smashing the ceiling. Nice to hear.
**** It is if I say it is.

I don't think your day can get any better! Oh wait, it just did because I came by ;)
LOL Zuhn comment made me laugh.
Now see, here I thought *I* was having a good day because I'm not at work. I'm in warm, sunny Miami.
But nooooo.... you just *had* to go and have a better day!
YAY you, darlin! :)
The boy's thank you comment made me tear up just a little bit. That must've made your day.
Glad it was a good one--hope the rest of your week follows suit!
uh, i'd say your life is a helluva lot better than good.
Zuhn cracked me up.
I also agree with Sharkey, LBE's comment was precious.
I'm glad your day was good Eclectic!
Zuhn: OMG -- you're like, psychic or something, aren't you. How did you KNOW my day would get even better when you came by?! ;) It's always a pleasure to see my very first commenter EVER. You haven't drop-kicked me yet, and that is incredibly gratifying.
CK: If I have a good day, it doesn't take one away from someone else, does it? Because that would make me feel terrible! So, I'm glad you had a good day, too. I bet it would be even better if you had company in the sun sipping an umbrella drink with you... and ogling pictures of Trace Adkins. ;)
Shawkey: Aww, I didn't mean to make you cry. But he is an awfully sweet boy, [when he's not being a pain in the ass]. ;) And yes, it DID make my day.
Kat: Well, the allegation has been levelled, but I don't like to say so for fear of jinxing it. Of course, it'd be even better if you were here drinking a Grey Goose martini with me.
Sooze: Wait -- you totally snuck in while I was commenting! Zuhn has a knack for the sharp witty, doesn't she?! I'm awfully glad to see you -- didn't expect to see you much for a couple of weeks. But I DID get a very thoughtful card from someone today, and that was ANOTHER reason it was such a good day. Thanks, my friend. Your friendship means more to me than you know. :)
Did someone say Grey Goose?
:o)
I'm so glad you had a wonderful day! Starting at 6:30, eh? Sleep is a wonderful thing.
Wow, it looks like you had a great day! *hugs*
Hey there, Mo-Dis! Sleep IS a wonderful thing. It was a very good day! When are we going to go to lunch or something??
That's one rockin' day! Good! We need these, don't we? Here's what would stand out to me:
We all love good school reports, don't we? School can be hard on parents at times, not just kids.
Having something to wear that doesn't need ironing is a must. I probably would show up at worked either wrinkled or naked before I would press clothes.
A lovely man who makes good coffee... Mmmm... life is but a dream right there, E!
Holy shit I love me some brownies!!
Were angels singing in your ears while moving little clouds under your feet so that you didn't have to step on the ground like the rest of us mere mortals??
Sounds like a completely fabulous day! Everyone deserves a day like that every once in a while... it makes all the other crap worth it!
Glad you had a great day.
I simply adore you!
A good day is what gets through a bad one . . . wishing you my dear, many more good ones. I'm so totally with you on a man who can make a good cup of coffee.
You already knew those things about your son, but being told those things by another is so reasuring.
His comment well you know it just touched my heart . . .
I got up at 5:00AM and went to work and got home at 10:30PM and went to bed. So, you know, my life is pretty cool too.
Hmmm...
Wanna trade?
Hello, Shari.
That IS a very good day. I also think I shall adopt the motto: It IS if I say it is. Maybe I could have it translated into Latin?
I see The Sunbeams and Lollipops Fairy has stopped by somebody's house today. The manure truck stopped by the filed next to our house yesterday. Wanna trade?
Three cheers for good days! Of course, any day with football is a good day in my book!
P.S.- Your son's school conference and the comment he made to you speaks volumes about the type of person you are and the kids you are raising! I'll be tapping you for advice if I ever have kids!
That sounds like a very good day indeed. I'm so glad you got both bits of good news too at the parent's evening. It's one thing to have a really bright child but it's even better when they are bright and can get on with everyday life as well. May you have many more good days like that. :)
Oh man! Fresh brownies first thing in the morning? Faaaantastic!
I love good days. Yours sounds DIVINE.
Lynn: Oh how right you are -- in every respect. I've often threatened, "If they don't like the wrinkles then next time, I'll just go naked!" But, I'm thinking that wrinkle-free skin won't last, so I'll have to devise an alternate threat when that happens... ;)
JDR: Deal! I'll take it!! Give JellyBean smoochies from me, please!
Bloggy: So I hear.... They're really good with coffee.
Hemlock: Pretty much -- it was angles and clouds (and sunbeams and lollipops!) all day long. I guess it must've been my turn. I'm just grateful!
Traci: Well, I'm taking that as a crazy compliment, coming from someone I admire.
Nina: How right you are! And anything good that can touch your heart right now is something I'm all in favor of. Your heart has me worried, but I know how strong you are, so I just keep thinking about that instead of worrying. Love you!
Scott: Hello! Living wild, eh? Try to keep the volume down a little -- some of us are trying to sleep.
HeatherAnne: Latin? Oh, right... the lawschool reference. Except that we didn't have to take Latin, so..., um..., sorry. But it'll sound something along the lines of "oportet quia inquam" (forgive my grammatical errors). Hey, I can look up a Latin/English dictionary just like the next kid. ;)
Limpy: HA! Yeah, it's a little bright and shiny 'round here, even for me... but I think I'll let you keep your field of shit. Or was that a filed?
Lushy: Amen sistah -- I don't care what Bloggy says about sports being evil. Any day with football is better than a day without it. Cheers! And when you're ready to procreate, I'll be more than happy to make fun of your pregnant belly. *heh* Naw, I'm flattered, and thanks.
Platypus: Thank you for the good wish! And you're so right - each aspect made the other more valuable to me. :)
Rick: Sssshhhhhhh! C'mon man... you're wrecking my street cred.
Kranki: I KNOW!! Completely decadent, but it made everyone smile, and that's worth something.
Caitlin: Me too! It was awesome. Today didn't suck much, either. Which probably means the universe is gearing up for a shit-fest, but for now, I'm just going to enjoy my good fortune. ;)
I used to love parent/teacher conferences, because I knew my kids were good students and teachers' pets and IO would spend an evening being told by others how well my kids were doing.
I never took pride in their accomplishments - that was theirs to be proud of - but I did take pride in having raised two young people who were looked on as "good people" - kind, thoughtful, caring, industrious, positive, and a joy to be around. Sounds like your son is the same - and I say "good on you!" His marks are his to be proud of - but you helped shape his character, and if you never do anything more remarkable than that in your life, it's still a life well lived.
Dad told me to be polite and funny; he never mentioned I should also know how to make coffee. Fortunately, I figured that one out on my own.
Now I just have to figure out if any of it won over my wife.
Sounds like a great day, E. Glad for you.
LOVE when the mornings with kids go well. Makes everything feel good.
