Absence Explained
Aging, when taken to its extreme, can be a real buzz-kill.
Today is my mother-in-law's 80th birthday. To celebrate, she underwent total hip replacement surgery. Sweet, huh? Now this woman is no delicate flower, having had a kidney removed in the process of beating kidney cancer back in the 1970s, and then having a breast removed in the process of beating breast cancer back in the 1980s. She lives independently, cares for her 82 year old husband who suffers from CHF secondary to a MI/stroke episode awhile back. She drives -- a big ol' Caddy -- and does so capably.
Now? This fierce, independent creature has been reduced to an agonized heap of de-pendence, thanks to a rare neurological response to her hip replacement that is causing nearly unbearable pain. She cannot care for herself. She cannot care for her husband.
But I can. And I do. And I will, starting Sunday. I will be in Massachussets for a week. I've been making all the necessary arrangements for my children and my work, so please forgive me for neglecting this site. I am still prowling the world wide web, checking up on all of you and randomly commenting though, so don't think I've left you entirely to your own devices. Especially you, Bucky. Your own devices usually scare me...

Oh honey - good luck and let us know how you're doing, if you can.
I'm caring for my mother too, I know what you're going through. There's a special place reserved for you in heaven for your selflessness (heaven or Pete's All You Can Drink Margarita Buffet and All Male Strip Club, whichever you believe in).
Wow, I'm so sorry Eclectic. I was wondering where you were and hoping you were ok. I didn't want to bug you though....sending you a card is one thing, full on stalking you is entirely different!!!
Your Mother-in-Law is so very lucky to have you. Your entire family is so lucky to have you. We in the blog world are lucky to "have" you!!
You're such a wonderful, caring, strong and giving person.
Be safe and know that we'll be thinking about you and your Mother-in-Law.
Take care,
Suzie
Your MIL sounds like one tough lady. I hope the doctors are able to figure out something that will help her pain. My stepdad has been living with chronic, debilitating pain for years, and it's horrible.
Have a safe trip. We'll be here when you return.
What a SHAME! I hope her pain is very temporary and she is back to her usual KICK ASS self really soon.
You guys take care!
You and your MIL are in my prayers and thoughts. I hope everything works out well. Dont worry about being absent, its an excused absence!
Family. It's all we have. And they have you Eeeclectic. And they are lucky!
i'm wishing her a speedy recovery and just want to say that she's so very lucky to have you. hope all goes well, and keep us posted ok?
wow, best wishes to everyone that things work out well.
Hey, when I dont feel good you want to come over this way and take care of me too? Or at least my saint beTards?
:)
Yikes. I hope your mom will be up an back at it with even more fierceness soon. She's lucky to have you. Good luck!
Hope all goes well with your mother-in-law. Best wishes! (and don't worry - we'll all still be here when you get back...)
I was a care giver for my Gran for several years before she passed. Doing so allowed her to stay in her home rather than going to a facility. It was important to her. She was the most dependant independant woman I knew. Keeping very good thoughts for you!
Well I hope it all goes smooth for you. And your MIL is out of pain really soon.
I am leaving next Thursday to take care of my grandma for a week. I am not looking forward to it, I don't want to see the decline since Thanksgiving. But I sure owe my cousin this break since she has been taking care of her all by herself.
:::sending travel mercies, and lots of patience and well-being vibes:::
Your MIL is blessed to have such a wonderful DIL like you.
Just thought you should know. :o)
I'm glad you're going hunny. It's very cool that you can. Be safe and do something fun while you're there. That poor woman...I simply broke my hip when I was 14 and the pain was excrutiating...I can't even imagine the pain from this. I'm glad she has you. Peace.
You are a lovely daughter-in-law. And no one here is a bit surprised; you're a lovely everything else, too. Be safe. A lot of prayers go with you, sweetie.
Wow. Sorry to hear the news. Good luck to your MIL and your family getting through this.

*sniff*...we miss you. This isn't NATURAL.
Jim's right. This is like a disturbance in the force, or something to that effect.
It just ain't right.
I hope you come home soon because we all miss the snot out of you.
Hell, we didn't even wreck your house when you were gone 'cause we missed you so much.
:::places vaseful of pretty flowers on table to await your return:::
Yeah, what Jim and M_D said. I find my self wondering, What Would Eclectic Say?
Hope your MIL is recovering nicely under your TLC.
Hope all is well.
Do you think you'll get those three hours back when you return home?
It has been more than a week! Are you there? Are you ok?
Just stopping in to say hello.
