"New"

What is it about "new" that invigorates and excites us? New love, new job, new baby, new home... Hallmark makes a fortune on cards commemorating "new" events. Why are we so addicted to beginning or acquiring something "new", rather than continuing or maintaining something already begun or acquired?

I know...

But pop psychology aside, I think it's more than the mere wish to clean the slate or avoid long-term investment and effort. I think that beneath those obvious contributors there's something inherently optimistic about most of us. There's this indomitability in the human psyche that longs for yet another opportunity to fulfill our perceived potential.

Deep inside? We all believe we're capable of better than we've proved so far.

So we look to the new year as a custom-made "do-over" or "do-better" or "be-better" and the challenge is intoxicating at first. No, it's not just the champagne, the new start can be heady, too. Each year as we try to make ourselves, our families, our communities and our world better, the fact that we try is itself our success. To continue to attempt that which has not yet been accomplished -- whether it's quitting smoking, or finding and giving more love, or accomplishing better fitness, or learning a new skill -- is to give us all reason to believe we can.

And that? That's a cause to celebrate if ever I heard one. Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, Eclectics.

I don't make resolutions. I hate to fail. If I change myself for the better, then I can do it at any time.

Great post, though. Optimism abounds. :-)

Man you hit the nail on the head with this one (as you usually seem to do)

I have never in my life made "New Year Resolutions" 'cept for this upcoming New Year. The ONLY reason I'm making resolutions is because I found 2005 to be one of my worst years. Don't get me wrong, there were good (actually GREAT!) parts of 2005, but overall it's been a year I'd love to "do over" and better.

2006 Baby is the year of the Sooze!

Happy New Year to you Eclectic and your entire family!

You're right--it's not necessarily just the "new" that gets us, but the other half of that marketing partnership: "improved." We can start fresh and improve ourselves, our relationships, our lives.

Happy New Year, Eclectics!

Maintenance is always so much more difficult than acquisition. Having had a fair amount of change in the past three years, I agree that it can be very addictive.

A thought-provoking post, Shari. Happy New Year!

I put about as much faith in the new year as I do in a new sequel to a string of movies. I have hope that the director can steer it where it needs to go. I have hope that the characters are more than they seem. But mostly I trust only that the snacks will be good. That way if it does suck, I’m not surprised and if actually turns out to be good, I can brag that I still have my ticket stub.

More Red Hots anyone?

You are so right. We all crave that clean slate. Fresh.
Happy New Year, Shari and family :)

I don't normally make resolutions, but I do keep trying harder. I told Jif that by this time next year, I resolve to be younger (in a "Real Age" kind of way). I shall keep that one, one way or another :)

Squirl: Absolutely!! That's the thing -- we CAN make positive change, anytime we WANT!! And if the turn of the year makes us more aware of it, then so much the better, I say!! Happy, happy '06 to you and Ichabod, Squirlie!!

M/D: ***clearing throat*** Um... thank you! I have a feeling '06 is going to be a great year for you!

Kylz: Really? Thanks! Back atcha, Beautiful!!

Angie: I tell our kids that forgiving someone means to give them a 'do-over'. We all need them! And yes, I'm sure he's grown..., but I can't prove it. ;)

Sooze: Watch out, world! I'm honored to go along for the ride with you, my friend!

Sharkey: Yes, "...and improved" is absolutely the other half of "new." Happy '06 to the Malarkeys, too!

Mrtl: HA!! Maybe if the banner was able to take Frida for an hour or so every day so you could go work out without any prenatal interference?

KillerChi: Bwahaha! Your "horn" is too cute... but couldja go easy on the tooting?? ;)

Curtis: Right on, brother!

Twixie: Thanks! You too!

Nikki: You are too kind! Best to you all, too!

Jenny: Ch-ch-ch-ch-chang-es...! Here's hoping that '06 brings us all to TequilaCon. I'm sure that will be sufficient change for even the most hard-core "new" addict.

Kat: We're similar in many ways, Kat. Hope the new year fails to disappoint us!

Bloggy: Why yes, please! And thanks for asking.

Susie: Good luck with the getting younger thing, and when you succeed? Can I have permission to copy you??!

Nina: I'm looking forward to seeing you in person in '06!!

William: Thank you, Bill -- Happy '06 to you, too!

Kranki: Glad you agree -- I am especially optimistic for you this year!! Here's to fantastic "power packs" and perfect health!

KillerChi: What a nice thing to say!! :::smoochies:::
